Each year, around the holidays, I like to make it a part of our tradition to show gratitude to those people in our community without whom our lives would be much more difficult in general. 2020 has been a year like none of us have ever known, and while many of us have the luxury of working from home, some folks are still headed in to work each day. This year, in addition to those I have traditionally given a gift to show my appreciation around the holidays, there are quite a few essential workers, such as health-care professionals, grocery store employees, postal workers, firefighters, and police officers, just to name a few, who have continued to work tirelessly to serve our community and deserve appreciation as well.
You may be wondering how you can show appreciation for anyone this year while we are under stay-at-home orders. Instead, try to focus on what you can do during this time; keep in mind, small efforts can go a long way. One small way to show someone that you are sincere is to write a personal note thanking the person for something he/she/they specifically did. Essential workers leave the house and are exposed to people all day, not knowing who is infected and whether or not they are protected. It takes courage and perseverance to work in a public place.
Essential employees everywhere are working hard to make our lives easier during this pandemic. During these stressful times, it’s important to show gratitude to those who are committed to serving us every day since they give up their safety to ensure ours. I know I am tremendously grateful to the people serving on the frontlines. Not only are they ensuring we have essential care, supplies, and services, but they are often doing it while interacting with members of the public who could potentially make them ill. One of the absolute best gifts you can give to thank essential employees is keeping yourself safe at home so we can stop the spread of COVID-19. Wash your hands often, and stay inside except for absolutely necessary trips for grocery shopping, medical appointments, picking up prescriptions, walking pets, and helping the vulnerable. When outside and in public, use social distancing to stay at least six feet away from others. We’re all in this together.
